Unlocking Income Streams Without a Massive Following

Chapter 1: Starting My Freelancing Journey
When I embarked on my freelancing adventure in 2019, I felt utterly lost. Even now, I sometimes find myself in the same boat. However, one thing I knew for certain was that I didn’t begin with a robust social media presence.
After a brief stint as a personal assistant in the legal field, I decided to leave my job without having another lined up. I submitted my three-month notice and began searching for an opportunity that would allow me to work from home in my pajamas. With only a couple of weeks before my departure from the corporate world, I landed a freelance position at a Virtual Assistant agency, serving some impressive clients and earning enough to cover my bills—provided I put in the effort.
So, how did I secure that role? A simple Google search and a phone call did the trick. While it wasn’t a path to riches, it was a start and provided me with the foundation to build upon. More importantly, it gave me the confidence to seek out my own clients since I was now actively engaged in the work.
I quickly established a small client base by monitoring LinkedIn updates (with less than 100 followers at the time) and exploring Facebook groups for job opportunities. Within a few months, I was fully booked with both agency assignments and personal clients, earning nearly the same as my former corporate salary—while enjoying the luxury of working from home in my pajamas. A true win-win!
This is merely one instance, which some might dismiss as luck. Thus, I’ll share another example—because the VA field wasn’t my ultimate goal. “I’m a writer, you know.”
Chapter 2: Transitioning to Copywriting
At the start of 2021, I chose to leave behind my administrative challenges and venture into copywriting. This time, I created an Instagram account, believing this platform was where many of my ideal clients would congregate.
Initially, my content was far from perfect (let’s be honest), but I used the account to forge connections with fellow copywriters, engage in discussions with inspiring individuals, and seek out potential collaborators. Within a few months, I found a coach who I continue to work with today.
And the best part?
I secured numerous job opportunities. At the time of writing, I have fewer than 500 followers on Instagram, yet my average earnings are around £3,000 per month.
What does this demonstrate? You don’t need a massive social media following to earn money online.
It’s always about quality over quantity—be it in your work, your connections, or your mindset. The most rewarding aspect? I haven’t had to compromise on my values to reach this point. I frequently decline offers, choosing only to work with clients I genuinely want to partner with on enjoyable projects.
Section 2.1: Engagement Over Numbers
Having followed some prominent Instagram accounts in the online business sector, I’ve observed that high follower counts don’t necessarily translate to strong engagement. Many of these accounts invest heavily in advertising and affiliate marketing, but real connections? That remains a topic for another time.
Section 2.2: The Importance of Connections
Ultimately, the age-old saying rings true: it’s not just about what you know, but who you know. While knowledge is vital—after all, I wouldn’t earn referrals without being skilled in my work—building meaningful connections is equally crucial. The only way to establish those connections is by dedicating time to nurture them.
