Creating a Thriving Coaching Career: Insights from Leslie Yerkes

Written on

Chapter 1: The Importance of Caring and Generosity

At the heart of a flourishing coaching career lies the principles of caring and generosity. It is vital to offer your time, skills, and compassion wherever they are most needed, regardless of financial gain. When you dedicate yourself to helping others achieve their goals, you often find that support will return to you in unexpected ways.

The coaching industry has seen remarkable growth, now valued at approximately $15 billion. Many individuals have transitioned from traditional office roles to become successful coaches. However, the journey to success is not guaranteed for everyone entering this field. What must aspiring life, wellness, or business coaches understand to forge a successful and fulfilling career?

In our interview series titled "Five Things You Need to Create a Highly Successful Career as a Life or Business Coach," we engage with seasoned coaches across various specialties. They share invaluable strategies for achieving success in this competitive landscape.

In this particular session, we had the honor of speaking with Leslie Yerkes.

Leslie Yerkes is the President of Catalyst Consulting Group, Inc. With over four decades of experience, she has dedicated her career to helping individuals realize their potential and achieve their goals. Her passion lies in unlocking human potential.

Thank you for joining us in this enlightening interview series! Before we delve into the core topics, could you share a bit about your journey and what led you to this path?

I never intended to establish a consulting business, but throughout my career, I have always coached individuals to identify their strengths. My professional journey began in special education. I hold teaching in high esteem and believe that every child possesses unique gifts, regardless of their challenges. Had the education system been more valued in our country, I might have remained in that field. Instead, I chose to advocate for change from the outside, supporting "kids in big bodies" – adults facing their own challenges and strengths.

Section 1.1: Key Traits for Success

As a successful business leader, which three character traits do you believe have been most pivotal in your journey? Could you share a specific example for each?

The choice to embrace self-employment and become a contributing leader requires continuous growth. The three character traits that have significantly influenced my long-standing career are:

  1. Positivity: I strive to be a source of optimism for my clients and colleagues. While I face challenges head-on without wearing 'rose-colored glasses,' I actively seek the positive aspects in every situation and the strengths in each person. My focus remains on the possibilities and cultivating gratitude.
  2. Persistence: I embody the spirit of the "Little Engine That Could," continually affirming, "I think I can" as I pursue my goals. I refuse to accept "no" after the first attempt and remain committed to exploring various solutions. I tackle the most challenging tasks first, allowing my day to unfold productively.
  3. Learning Agility: I thrive on discovering new concepts and adapting to change. The ability to learn continuously fuels my personal and professional growth. I encourage curiosity, experimentation, and deep engagement with my passions.

Lastly, it is crucial to identify what you love and pursue it passionately.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Role of Habits

Importance of establishing good habits in coaching.

Section 1.2: The Significance of Habits in Success

Habits play a fundamental role in my success. Although I once embraced spontaneity, the nature of consulting and coaching necessitates discipline and the establishment of consistent routines.

My initial habit was to evaluate how I utilized my time. To thrive, I needed to ensure that my schedule included prospecting, networking, client work, and business operations. Striking a balance among these activities proved essential for my success.

Over time, I learned to prioritize self-care in my routine to prevent burnout. I allocate time daily for planning and reflection, ensuring my focus remains on what truly matters.

During the pandemic, I adopted a new habit: stopping work when fatigued. Ending my day after dinner allows me to return to work rejuvenated and ready to tackle challenges creatively.

Chapter 2: Developing Positive Habits

In the video titled "I HAVE GOT 10 MORE YEARS OF GOOD IN ME | With Leslie Yerkes | The Business Spotlight," Leslie discusses the importance of cultivating good habits and the impact they can have on our lives.

A successful habit is one that you can replicate consistently. Developing effective habits involves experimentation; not everything will resonate with everyone due to our unique personalities.

When I stray from my healthy habits, I often notice an increase in stress and imbalance. For instance, my weight fluctuates because I sometimes neglect the healthy eating habits that serve me well.

To cultivate good habits, self-awareness is key. I reflect on my actions and consciously choose to implement habits that align with my goals. Currently, I am working to eliminate fast food from my diet by planning meals and prioritizing healthy ingredients.

What life lesson quote resonates with you the most?

"I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live." — George Bernard Shaw. This quote inspires me to live life to the fullest.

What exciting projects are you currently working on that could benefit others?

Recently, I met a man who had just left a job after 23 years. I offered him insights from a book I was reading about crafting a fulfilling life. After reflecting on his situation, he expressed his desire for a healthier work environment. Together, we initiated a job club to support individuals seeking better opportunities.

In conclusion, what are the critical factors that differentiate successful coaches from those who struggle?

You cannot effectively coach without first having experienced the challenges of running a business yourself. Here are five essential components for creating a successful coaching career:

  1. Continuous Learning: Frame thoughtful questions to help clients discover their own answers.
  2. Authenticity: Align your actions with your advice to build trust.
  3. Skill Development: Regularly practice and refine your coaching abilities.
  4. Resourcefulness: Maintain a toolkit of resources to aid your clients' journeys.
  5. Generosity: Offer your time and expertise freely; the universe often rewards such kindness.

Common pitfalls for new coaches include over-reliance on personal stories rather than focusing on the client's narrative.

For creating a remarkable customer experience, demonstrate genuine care, celebrate successes, and maintain a supportive presence.

To find clients, focus on delivering value, maintaining relationships, and actively engaging in networking opportunities.

Finally, prioritize your well-being by establishing boundaries between work and personal time. Balance is essential for sustained success.

If you could start a movement to benefit others, what would it be?

I believe in the power of individuals doing good quietly and consistently. I strive to support others in their pursuits and contribute positively to the world.
