Understanding the Futility of Living by Others' Expectations

Chapter 1: The Dangers of Conformity
Why should we consider avoiding the path of adhering to other people's expectations? The reasons may not be immediately obvious.
The Illusion of Acceptance
It might seem that by changing yourself to fit others' desires, you'll eventually find peace. However, this often leads to a more complicated situation. When you allow someone to overstep boundaries, they can begin to invade your personal life, feeling entitled to dictate your decisions. They will likely wish to exert even more control, affecting your work and personal relationships.
Living according to someone else's standards can be exhausting. The hope that they will eventually grant you more freedom is often misplaced.
Unclear Desires
Many people don't truly understand what they want or may desire conflicting things. As a result, even if you attempt to fulfill their wishes, their dissatisfaction may persist. For instance, a wife may want her husband to be successful while also being highly present in their relationship. If he works less, she might view him as lazy; if he works more, he may be seen as neglectful. It’s a no-win situation.
Similarly, a husband may expect his wife to be both submissive and passionate, which can lead to frustration for both parties if she feels compelled to suppress her individuality.
The core issue is not that you are inadequate or misaligned with their values. Rather, it's that others often lack the ability to recognize and appreciate your authentic self. Their unhappiness stems from their own inability to find satisfaction in their lives, leading them to seek validation through you.
People frequently change their desires and don't recognize the contradictions in what they ask of you. Striving to please multiple parties—like your mother and partner—can create chaos and undermine your mental well-being.
The pressure to conform often stems from a fear of rejection. While it's true that some may initially express discontent, many will adjust over time if you stand firm in your identity.
This video, "Letting Go of Expectations & Why Your Expectations Are Only Hurting YOU," delves into the significance of releasing the burden of others' expectations for your mental health and well-being.
