Navigating the Mind: Recognizing and Overcoming Mental Traps

Chapter 1: Understanding Your Mind's Deceptions
The brain can often behave in perplexing ways, launching unexpected psychological assaults that can derail your thoughts and actions. This complex organ, while remarkable, can sometimes become a source of self-sabotage.
Recently, during a tour, I had the opportunity to perform in Minneapolis and Iowa City. The first show in Minneapolis was exhilarating. Although I experienced some typical pre-show jitters, they were manageable. Riding that high, I headed to Iowa City the next day.
After a drive that left me feeling somewhat fatigued, I took a brief nap at my accommodation. Despite battling tiredness during soundcheck, I was determined to push through. However, about twenty minutes before my performance, negative thoughts began to creep in. My mind was telling me, "You're too exhausted; your energy will be off," and "Connecting with the audience will be a struggle."
These thoughts intensified my anxiety, and I found myself starting to believe the fabrications my mind was presenting. Yet, amidst this chaos, a quieter, more positive voice emerged, urging me to focus on doing my best. I clung to that voice, realizing that even if I felt tired, I was still fully capable of delivering a great performance.
Once on stage, it took mere moments to understand that my fears were unfounded. I reminded myself of my experience and skills, thinking, "I've performed countless times before; I know what I'm doing." And just like that, I embraced the energy of the crowd, which was incredible, and delivered a fantastic performance. My mind had tried to sabotage me, but I didn’t let it win.
How to Identify When Your Mind is Misleading You
The next time you find yourself engulfed in negativity, consider applying this two-step filtering process to your thoughts. This approach can often expose the inaccuracies of your negative beliefs.
The first step is to vocalize your thoughts. Speaking your negative assertions out loud can highlight their absurdity. Would it sound strange or inappropriate in a public setting? If so, it’s likely your mind is playing tricks on you. For instance, had I vocalized, "You're going to struggle interacting with the crowd," I would have recognized the ludicrousness of that statement.
The second step involves contrasting your current thoughts with past experiences. As I stood on stage, I quickly realized that my energy typically feels good because of my extensive rehearsal and experience. This realization helped me see those self-deprecating thoughts for what they truly were—lies.
There are undoubtedly other methods to challenge negative thoughts, but either of these filters can be effective. The key lies in confronting and dismantling these thoughts. Once you flip them around and recognize their absurdity, you can reclaim your confidence and well-being.
