Written on

Chapter 1: The Roots of Resilience

Valeria Garcia, a remarkable pastry chef and entrepreneur, exemplifies the essence of the American Dream. Hailing from Puerto Rico, she journeyed to the United States with dreams of culinary excellence and a desire to create. In our insightful conversation, she emphasizes the importance of staying focused on one's goals.

The American Dream remains vibrant for many immigrants. Through grit and determination, Valeria is a testament to this resilience. Now residing in Pennsylvania, she is dedicated to elevating her craft at her new establishment, Valosh Patisserie.

Growing Up in Puerto Rico

Valeria recounts her upbringing in Guayama, a picturesque town in southern Puerto Rico, where she was nurtured by her parents and attended private school. Her mother worked as a teacher, instilling a love for learning. Valeria’s childhood was characterized by active participation in school activities, culminating in her role as Senior Class President. Family outings to the beach and island explorations filled her weekends, creating cherished memories despite their modest means.

A Catalyst for Change

The turning point in her life came in 2017 when Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, leaving devastation in its wake. While studying in France, Valeria witnessed the aftermath upon her return and was deeply disheartened by the slow government response. Faced with rising bills and a failing infrastructure, she recognized the necessity for a significant change in her life.

Journey to the United States

In April 2019, Valeria made the leap to the United States with just $1,000, excited about a pastry position with a renowned chef in New York. However, the high cost of living and the fast-paced city life proved challenging. Despite her fluency in English, she encountered cultural hurdles that she hadn't anticipated. A friend's encouragement led her to Maryland, where her journey toward achieving her American Dream truly began.

The Importance of Support

Reflecting on her transition, Valeria expresses gratitude for the support she received during her move. She missed significant family milestones but found solace in work, often juggling three jobs at a time. Valeria acknowledges the unwavering love from her family, friends, and her boyfriend’s family as pivotal in navigating her new life.

Creating a Positive Impact

With Valosh Patisserie, Valeria aims to spread joy through her delicious desserts. However, her mission extends beyond sweets; she strives to cultivate kindness and positivity in her daily interactions. Having transformed her mindset, she now approaches challenges with calmness and grace, seeking solutions rather than dwelling on problems. Valeria holds a belief in the power of prayer, encouraging others to share their burdens with her.

A Vision for Immigration Reform

While Valeria did not face immigration challenges herself, she empathizes with friends who have. She advocates for a shift in perception, urging society to view immigrants as contributors rather than criminals. Furthermore, she emphasizes the need for improved access to education and respect within the immigration system.

Keys to Achieving the American Dream

Valeria shares her insights on navigating the American landscape:

  1. Don’t Take Racism Personally: Despite the realities of racism, she learned to focus on communities that are accepting, like Pennsylvania.
  2. Embrace Your Strengths: Recognize your unique journey and the skills you bring.
  3. Stay Goal-Oriented: Keep your aspirations in sight, especially if you left your home country for better opportunities.
  4. Be Consistent: Seize job opportunities and strive for excellence.
  5. Understand Your Documents: Always read the fine print and seek clarification when needed.

Optimism for the Future

Looking ahead, Valeria is hopeful about the increased availability of business grants and the growing acceptance of multiculturalism in the United States. She believes these changes pave the way for a brighter future.

Dream Lunch Guest

When asked who she’d like to share a meal with, Valeria eagerly names Jennifer Lopez, admiring her resilience and advocacy for the community.
