Chapter 1: Embracing the Run
Before we dive in, let’s clarify — this discussion centers around running. If the thought of running is unappealing to you, this may not be your cup of tea. However, if you recognize running as one of the most accessible and beneficial activities for your mental and physical well-being, stay tuned.
For me, running is typically a delightful experience because I genuinely enjoy it. Nonetheless, I understand that for those who are untrained or unfamiliar with it, running can be a daunting task. Even as a seasoned runner, I occasionally face challenges.
Just last evening, I nearly opted out of my run. After hours of conversation — primarily debating with my wife — I found myself overwhelmed with stress. Tuesdays are usually reserved for my more strenuous workouts. Today, even the idea of embarking on a light run felt like a monumental challenge. I was mentally drained, and for me, mental exhaustion often translates into physical weariness. I came dangerously close to skipping my run altogether. Given my consistent routine, I could have easily justified a break.
However, I’ve repeatedly managed to push through stress and fatigue. There’s a straightforward trick that can help.
Step 1: Simply step outside. Begin. While it may not seem easy, taking those first few seconds is crucial. Just start.
Step 2: Jog at an easy pace for ten minutes. Those initial ten minutes might feel stretched out, and you may feel burdened both physically and mentally, but remember, ten minutes is a brief commitment.
I assure you that after a few minutes, your mindset will begin to shift. By the time those ten minutes are up, clarity will return to your thoughts, and your body will feel lighter, dispelling that overwhelming sensation. I’ve never once turned back after warming up for ten minutes; it feels like taking an instant remedy.
So, I warmed up — jogging a mile and a half to a nearby high school, where I completed my speed workout on a stunning track:
The workout was still challenging (400-meter repeats). I experienced more difficulty today than usual, but it was a different kind of struggle: the body can feel worse during certain sessions, and predicting this is impossible. Nevertheless, the key takeaway is that once I began, all the stress from earlier in the day faded away.
Just ten minutes, and there’s no looking back. That’s why I consider this the only foolproof life hack I’ve encountered.
