The Surprising Lesson My 11-Year-Old Nephew Taught Me About Followers

Written on

Chapter 1: A Moment of Reflection

Recently, I celebrated reaching 30,000 followers on a social platform, feeling ecstatic and eager to share my achievement in my WhatsApp groups. However, my nephew, who was nearby, looked puzzled and somewhat irritated. "Why are you so thrilled about more followers?" he questioned, catching me off guard.

I attempted to explain that this milestone indicated that people appreciated my work and wanted to engage with my ideas. Yet, he wasn't convinced. "That’s not a good reason. Does every follower actually read your content and apply it?" he probed.

I had to concede that he had a valid point. Just because someone follows you doesn’t guarantee they are engaging with or implementing your ideas.

"So, what’s the purpose then?" he insisted. He went on for several minutes, expressing his belief that fixating on follower counts was pointless and that I shouldn’t derive happiness from such an illogical pursuit.

By the end of his critique, I was left speechless.

The True Value of Influence

In our current social media-driven environment, it’s easy to become fixated on metrics. We often obsess over the likes our posts receive or the number of followers we have. Yet, these numbers don't accurately measure the quality of anyone's work.

A large follower count doesn't automatically signify expertise, just as a smaller following doesn't diminish the value of someone's contributions. Ultimately, quality is subjective; what one individual considers brilliant, another might dismiss entirely.

Moreover, follower counts can fluctuate based on factors beyond a creator's control. For instance, if an article unexpectedly goes viral, your follower count might skyrocket overnight, but that doesn’t inherently enhance the quality of your other pieces. It simply reflects that readers appreciated that specific article, that it addressed a popular topic, or that your insights resonated at that moment.

If you manage to consistently replicate such success across your work, then sure, follower counts could indicate quality. However, that is a rarity among writers.

Instead of fixating on follower metrics, concentrate on the feedback from your audience. If you receive consistent positive responses—through likes, shares, or comments—this is a more reliable indicator of your content's value.

Additionally, focus on your satisfaction with your work. If you take pride in what you produce, that is what truly matters.

Avoiding the Numbers Trap

While social media can effectively promote your work and expand your audience, it should be viewed as a tool rather than a goal. The relentless pursuit of follower counts is a futile endeavor. There will always be someone with more followers, and your numbers are likely to change daily, creating an ever-moving target that is impossible to hit.

So, why chase it? Instead, think about how to leverage social media to achieve your objectives. Use it to monetize your creative efforts, attract clients, or even offer ghostwriting services. Cultivate relationships, share your work, and reach a broader audience without getting lost in the numbers game.

Rethinking Milestones

If you find yourself preoccupied with follower counts, you may also be tempted to celebrate milestones, such as "I just hit 1,000 followers!" or "I now have 10,000 followers!"

However, this fleeting joy can lead to complacency, providing a false sense of accomplishment that can hinder personal growth. Instead of celebrating follower milestones, acknowledge your true achievements. Assess the goals you've met, the progress you've made, and how your work has improved over time.

Recognizing these accomplishments will foster genuine pride and motivate you to continue enhancing your skills.

The Financial Perspective

If you're writing online, the ultimate goal is often financial gain. If you were writing purely for enjoyment, follower counts wouldn’t matter. So, why focus on them? Instead, pay attention to your income. Are you making money? Is your income increasing steadily? Does your follower count even represent a fraction of your monthly earnings?

These are the critical questions that matter.

Building a Sustainable Future

When you focus on follower metrics, it’s easy to develop frustration toward the platforms themselves. "Instagram is pointless; I’m not gaining followers!" or "Twitter is a waste; I’m not seeing any growth!"

However, remember that these platforms are merely tools without feelings or motives. Your dissatisfaction stems from linking your self-worth to follower counts, a cycle that will inevitably lead to disappointment.

Rather than harboring resentment, work towards establishing a sustainable business. Diversify your income streams, concentrate on producing quality work that people are willing to pay for, and create an email list to maintain connections with your audience independent of social media changes.

By adopting this approach, you will become more resilient to fluctuations in social media dynamics and better equipped to navigate future challenges.
