Finding the Balance: Why Patience Isn't the Only Answer

Chapter 1: The Myth of Patience
When I hear people extolling the virtues of patience, I often feel a flicker of hope. Countless quotes circulate, suggesting that good things come to those who wait and that patience can make anything achievable. The famous marshmallow test is frequently referenced as proof that waiting can lead to greater rewards.
However, as humans, we often crave instant gratification. The desire for quick results is a natural impulse, making the concept of patience seem less appealing. I used to believe patience was merely a personality trait, but my understanding has evolved.
Section 1.1: The Marshmallow Test Revisited
You may be familiar with the marshmallow test, where children are given the choice to eat one marshmallow immediately or wait 15 minutes for a second one. Researchers observed these children from behind a one-way mirror. Years later, they found that those who could resist the temptation of the marshmallow were often more successful later in life.
Yet, the significance of probability and certainty in this experiment is often overlooked. The children who chose to wait understood that their patience would lead to a guaranteed reward. A 15-minute wait for double the marshmallows is a worthwhile trade-off, especially when considering investment returns.
Moreover, for these children, marshmallows weren't a necessity. They could thrive without them, which made the task less stressful. As we grow older, the stakes change, and patience often feels less like an option and more like a requirement. Unfortunately, there are no guarantees that the outcomes will match our expectations.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Traffic Dilemma
When stuck in heavy traffic, I often opt for a scenic detour, even if it delays my arrival home. Both choices take longer, but the discomfort of being in a traffic jam is unbearable. The sight of endless vehicles amplifies my frustration.
Choosing a longer, smoother route allows me to enjoy the drive, listen to my favorite music, and feel like I’m making progress. In contrast, the uncertainty of being stuck in traffic is disheartening. Alternatively, I could wait somewhere comfortable, engaging in activities that distract me from the discomfort. Feeling in control of my waiting experience enhances my patience.
Many people perceive patience as a binary concept, labeling individuals as either patient or impatient based on rigid criteria. However, patience is more accurately described as a spectrum. A study identifies three distinct types of patience:
- Patience with others—nurturing empathy and effective communication.
- Patience in life’s challenges—resilience during tough times.
- Patience for everyday annoyances—coping with minor disruptions like waiting in lines.
I visualize patience as a pyramid, with everyday challenges at the base and deeper emotional regulation required for interpersonal relationships and life's hardships at the top. Acknowledging my own struggles with patience in daily inconveniences can make it even harder to navigate complex human interactions.
Chapter 2: The Impulse to React
The opposite of patience is impulsiveness. Personally, I struggle with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which makes me aware that spicy, acidic foods and coffee will likely cause discomfort later. Yet, during busy times, these foods offer momentary comfort, and I often opt for them, knowing I might face consequences.
Research suggests that as we age, our impulsiveness diminishes due to enhanced connections in the brain, particularly between the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and the ventral striatum (VS). The DLPFC is responsible for logical thinking, while the VS governs our preferences. In childhood, we often acted on instinct, prioritizing immediate comfort over future consequences. As adults, a strong DLPFC helps us make decisions that favor long-term benefits.
Yet, there are moments when impulsiveness re-emerges, and situational stress can amplify this tendency. The challenge of cultivating patience is that it doesn’t come naturally to us. However, research has shown that maintaining adequate serotonin levels in the brain can enhance patience.
Studies indicate that activating serotonin in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) can mitigate our natural impatience during uncertain situations. Some healthcare professionals prescribe serotonin boosters to help individuals manage impulsive behavior.
Serotonin can act as a calming agent, enabling me to enjoy the waiting process rather than fixating on the end goal. When I take a different route to avoid traffic, I inadvertently engage in activities that elevate my serotonin levels. This yields two rewards:
- Psychological closure—seeing tangible progress as I drive reinforces my belief that I will soon reach home.
- Mood enhancement—listening to podcasts or favorite music elevates my spirits and makes the drive feel shorter.
A support system can come from various sources; for me, it’s not solely human connections. Anything that brings positive energy—like music or hobbies—can also play a vital role in enhancing motivation.

To uncover what works for you, consider these three questions:
- What discomforts drive you crazy, and which can you tolerate? For example, I prefer a long drive over being stuck in traffic or a noisy environment over a crowded one.
- In which situations can you endure discomfort? Finding a supportive environment aligned with your values can enhance your patience.
- What activities or items can serve as mood boosters? Pairing challenging tasks with enjoyable activities, known as temptation rewards, can create positive associations.
For instance, research shows that combining enjoyable audiobooks with exercise can make physical activity more appealing, resulting in increased gym membership sales.
Let’s start by practicing patience with minor annoyances in our daily lives. Once we become adept at handling these small challenges, we can tackle more significant obstacles, ultimately improving our ability to navigate life's uncertainties.
