Finding Serenity: Embracing the Present and Letting Go of FOMO

Chapter 1: The Quest for Inner Peace
Achieving inner peace becomes a challenge when you perceive your current situation as inadequate. The moment you start to believe that another place or experience would be better, you introduce negativity into your mindset. True tranquility emerges when you fully accept your present circumstances.
In the 1990s, the New Age movement had lost its charm, alongside the era of power-dressing and the ideologies of Thatcherism. My generation found itself in a state of confusion, unsure of what to believe or pursue. The pursuit of wealth, spiritual exploration, and a free-spirited lifestyle seemed to have faded away, leaving us adrift.
Sitting on the small couch in my shared apartment, a housemate expressed her restlessness: "I can't seem to settle down. It's like there's something I'm supposed to be doing, but I can't identify it."
I completely understood her sentiment. I felt a surge of excitement, akin to the anticipation before embarking on an exhilarating project, yet we were devoid of any significant engagement.
We both experienced FOMO (fear of missing out).
Deep in thought, Sal raised her brows, pondering aloud, "Perhaps this feeling is intuition nudging us, indicating that something incredible is happening, and we should be part of it."
This led us to venture outside, explore various pubs, and stroll along the seafront, hoping to discover something more fulfilling than our current state.
When you desire life to be different from what it is, peace often eludes you. It refuses to dwell in places filled with dissatisfaction. The challenge lies in accepting that you might be missing out while still finding joy in what you’re currently experiencing, who you’re with, and the unpredictability of what lies ahead.
Now, with years of wisdom behind me, I recognize that familiar feeling of FOMO. Whenever it surfaces, I acknowledge it, take a deep breath, and immerse myself in the present moment. After all, the "here and now" is where life unfolds.
No matter if I’m boarding a train, resting in bed, or enjoying a gathering, the present moment is a constant companion. Denying it only leads to complications, fostering inner unrest and anxiety that are at odds with peace.
Through my journey, I’ve learned that to attain peace, I must embody it. This entails recognizing that the present moment is either the best or worst scenario, based on my perception. I hold the power to shape my emotional experience.
Instead of lamenting what I might be missing out on, I can cherish the moment and transform it into something meaningful, educational, or enjoyable. Alternatively, I could wallow in the belief that my life is insufficient, chasing after elusive experiences before deeming my life worthwhile.
If I could return to my FOMO-filled 90s, I would counsel my younger self to embrace the present and savor it, even if that meant forgoing other experiences.
Every moment carries its own value, and none should be deemed more significant than another. Certainly, there will be extraordinary occasions with loved ones that create cherished memories. However, equally important are the moments in between these significant events. It is within these instances that I can cultivate peace.
Often, the seemingly mundane moments are teeming with potential for serenity. They offer space for contemplation and dreams. In these moments, I can practice mindfulness, allowing peace to flow freely without the distracting notion that something better awaits just beyond the horizon.
