Exploring Medical Mysteries: Supplement Skepticism and Care

Chapter 1: The Role of Supplements in Health
I have a question for the knowledgeable physicians whose writings I frequently encounter on Medium — David Mokotoff, MD, and Bertrand Liang, MD, PhD — as well as any other interested experts.
It’s important to clarify that I’m not seeking free medical guidance. My inquiry is more general. As a 77-year-old Caucasian male from the United States, I have long held a belief in the benefits of supplements, dating back to my youth when I frequented health food stores. Interestingly, my current Primary Care physician now suggests certain supplements if my blood tests show deficiencies. This is a shift from the skepticism around supplements that existed in the 1970s!
However, I am curious: how can we be certain that these supplements aren't artificially influencing our blood test results, creating the illusion that everything is normal?
For instance, if my iron levels are slightly low, I might be advised to use a B12 liquid under my tongue. While this may improve the numbers, how do we know that this supplement has genuinely integrated into my system, rather than merely masking the issue? Are we simply seeing a facade of health?
As long as I have the opportunity to converse with these esteemed professionals, I would also like to inquire about the modern trend where physicians often refrain from physical examinations unless one is anesthetized for surgery.
I recall feeling much more reassured when my mid-20th-century doctor would palpate my abdomen and gently tap my knees with a reflex hammer!
I recognize the implications of the placebo effect and acknowledge the fear many doctors have regarding malpractice claims, particularly from patients who might misconstrue a physical exam. Nonetheless, when I received a thorough examination, it felt as though my physician was genuinely invested in my well-being, validating the time I spent waiting for my appointment.
I am eager to read your thoughts on these matters.
