The Shocking Tale of a Woman Who Woke Up in Her Own Coffin
Written on
Neysi Perez, a 16-year-old girl from La Entrada, Honduras, experienced a horrifying incident in August 2015. She awoke in the middle of the night, needing to use the restroom. Being pregnant with her husband Rudy Gonzales's child, she cautiously made her way to the bathroom located in an outhouse.
What transpired next remains a mystery, as Neysi never made it to her destination. The following day, her mother, Maria, discovered her daughter on the ground, unresponsive and foaming at the mouth.
Despite the dire situation, Neysi’s family did not immediately call for medical help. Living in a region with limited access to healthcare and a strong belief in superstition, they opted to summon a priest for an exorcism instead. Rudy echoed this sentiment, claiming that “another voice” was within Neysi. The priest performed the ritual, but Neysi did not regain consciousness. Eventually, desperate for help, she was taken to the local hospital.
Three hours later, doctors declared her dead. Neysi was subsequently buried in her wedding dress.
The following day, a heartbroken Rudy visited the cemetery to mourn his wife. To his shock, he heard muffled cries and banging sounds emanating from the concrete tomb where Neysi lay. It became evident that Neysi was still alive and attempting to escape.
Having been buried for nearly a day, Rudy quickly gathered a group of people armed with sledgehammers and metal pipes to break into the concrete structure.
After some frantic minutes, they managed to extract Neysi’s coffin. Reports indicated that the glass windows of the coffin were shattered and that Neysi had visible bruises on her hands. Her cousin, Carolina Perez, even detected a faint heartbeat.
Thus, just a day after being pronounced dead, Neysi was rushed back to the hospital in a desperate attempt to revive her.
However, despite all the medical interventions, doctors ultimately concluded that Neysi was indeed clinically dead. She was placed back into the coffin and returned to the mausoleum from which she had been taken.
Within hours, Neysi Perez was pronounced dead for the second time.
Numerous questions linger regarding this case. How did Neysi, who initially went to the bathroom, end up unresponsive on the ground?
Two primary theories attempt to clarify the events. The first suggests that Neysi experienced a panic attack triggered by a gunshot, as her neighborhood was notorious for gang violence and gunfire.
The second, and perhaps more plausible theory, involves Catalepsy—a condition associated with certain nervous disorders such as epilepsy. Given that Neysi was foaming at the mouth, this explanation seems particularly relevant.
Catalepsy can lead to muscle rigidity, unresponsiveness, and a near-undetectable heartbeat, causing the individual to appear deceased.
Could it be that the medical professionals overlooked the possibility of Catalepsy and mistakenly declared Neysi dead? In cases where a person appears lifeless, doctors should conduct thorough examinations, including an electrocardiogram and an electroencephalogram, to confirm brain death. However, given Neysi's impoverished background, it is unlikely that such advanced testing was available.
Assuming Neysi did awaken within the coffin, the horror of her experience is unimaginable. Groping in the dark, she might have panicked and started banging against the glass cover. It’s conceivable that she broke the glass and that shards fell on her face. Neysi likely screamed for help for what could have been several minutes or hours before Rudy finally heard her.
Yet, one must ponder how long a person could survive without oxygen. Did her tomb have any air supply? Did Neysi's family, choosing to prioritize superstition over medical care, embellish the details of the story?
While many questions remain unanswered, one fact is certain: Neysi Perez was declared dead twice and buried twice. The truth about what transpired may never be fully understood.
Rest in peace, Neysi.
