A Winter Wonderland in June: A Journey of Hope

Chapter 1: A Snowy Day in June
It's June 13th, and the snow continues to fall relentlessly. I can’t help but smile as I brush the flakes from my goggles. Below, the snow-laden pines slope down into the valley, and I am momentarily captivated by their stunning beauty.
Resting against my poles, I push off, quickly gaining momentum until I’m gliding smoothly, ready to carve my first turn. Although years have passed, the skis feel like they are a natural extension of me, as integral as my heart or lungs. My legs sway rhythmically, right, left, right, left, as I soar over the snow. This must be the sensation of flight.
I navigate the slope as it bends around a cluster of trees, and the thrill of recognition surges through me; I’ve traversed this terrain countless times since I was just ten years old.
Yet, it’s nearly over. I glide beneath the lift that crosses close to the end of my descent, my thighs aching from disuse. Regardless, I’m determined to ascend again, even if it exhausts me. I curve my skis, banking hard to decelerate as I...
I gasp when my goggle lenses flicker. The bright horizontal green lines are nearly blinding. I'm certain I’m about to crash — just as the nurse gently removes the goggles from my face.
“Time for your medication,” she informs me.
I slump back against my pillow, breathless. “Please,” I plead. “Just a little bit longer.”
She glances at the vital signs monitor beside my bed. “I don't think that’s possible. Your heart rate is a bit high.” She disconnects my goggles, shutting off the simulator. “Tomorrow,” she adds gently, noticing my disappointment.
One day, I think as she prepares the medication. One day, I will recover and ski that slope a thousand times over, then a thousand more, to compensate for all the moments I’ve missed. One day, I will soar.
