When Will It Be Enough? A Reflection on Life and Innovation

Written on

Chapter 1: The Illusion of Time

Life seems to race past us, and there’s a well-known thought experiment that illustrates this phenomenon. It involves a funnel and a marble. At the beginning of our lives, the marble sits at the top, slowly making its way around the outer edge, much like a roulette wheel. Initially, it takes an eternity to complete a rotation. However, as time progresses, the marble descends deeper into the funnel, tightening its rotations and accelerating until it becomes a blur, ultimately plunging into darkness. This is an apt metaphor for our existence.

At the same time, technological advancements are accelerating rapidly. The interval between innovations continues to shrink—everything is becoming faster, smaller, and brighter. It often feels as though technology is outpacing our ability to adapt, reminiscent of the upheaval faced by wagon wheel manufacturers after the advent of the automobile.

Despite the buzz, significant disruptions from innovation are infrequent and often take longer to manifest than we anticipate. When we find ourselves in the middle of these changes, it's challenging to discern if we're witnessing a genuine paradigm shift or just a fleeting moment before life returns to its usual rhythm. If true innovation were happening as frequently as advertised, we'd likely already have flying cars and robotic assistants.

Are we truly experiencing a faster-paced life, or are we simply aging? It’s crucial to consider what we genuinely gain from all these innovations, apart from feeling overwhelmed. How much improvement can we expect, and is there a purpose to these advancements beyond profit?

Section 1.1: The TV Upgrade Dilemma

About a year ago, I decided to upgrade the television in my home office. I owned a 27” 720HD model that served me well for years. However, after assisting my mother with her kitchen TV upgrade, I noticed how affordable 4K TVs had become and thought, why not treat myself?

I discovered an interesting trend in TV pricing. A compact 4K model under 30” often costs significantly more than those ranging from 40” to 50”, which could be found for less than $300, sometimes even under $200, complete with Smart TV features. My new 40” 4K FireTV was a sight to behold, especially with the addition of a soundbar for an extra $90—a substantial improvement over my previous setup. But, as I transitioned from 27” to 40” and from 720 to 4K, the difference in quality was less noticeable than expected, given the limited 4K content available.

Recently, I stumbled upon an article that challenged the hype surrounding 4K TVs. It highlighted that due to long-standing advice against sitting too close to screens, most people watch from a distance of 8–12 feet. At such distances, particularly with smaller screens, our eyes struggle to detect the finer details. One would need to sit a mere three feet away to truly appreciate the difference—a rarity in typical viewing habits.

TV upgrade dilemma: a 4K television setup

Just the other day, I encountered a tech review claiming to showcase the best new 4K TVs. Their top choice started at an eye-watering $3,300. While I’m sure there’s scientific backing for their conclusion, I find it hard to believe I’d notice any significant difference between their high-end model and my modest $300 version.

Section 1.2: The Acceleration of Electric Vehicles

In the realm of electric vehicles, we now have cars that can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under four seconds, with the fastest Tesla model doing it in a mere 2.3 seconds. This speed far exceeds what most drivers can safely manage. Ironically, this is also about the average reaction time needed to hit the brakes in an emergency. Imagine the chaos if a driver accidentally hits the gas instead of the brake in a crowded parking lot.

A particularly alarming example is a 9,000-pound, 1,000-horsepower Hummer capable of hitting 0-60 in just three seconds. Such performance is impractical and poses significant safety risks on public roads. Just because we can engineer these vehicles doesn’t mean we should let everyday drivers take them out on the streets.

You may recall a tragic incident in 2022 involving a $300,000 Bentley Flying Spur that was speeding at 100 mph when it crashed, resulting in fatalities. Such events cast doubt on our visions of future transportation.

Chapter 2: The Question of Technological Advances

We’ve been hearing about Bitcoin and the energy-intensive blockchain technology behind it for over a decade. It has largely proven to be a disaster, notorious for its lack of security and dubious utility aside from facilitating illicit activities. It represents a convoluted answer to a problem that hardly existed.

Now, we face another energy-consuming trend: Artificial Intelligence. This technology harnesses vast computational power to produce low-quality content and exploit unpaid labor, leading to further economic instability. With each new invention, we seem to waste more resources for hollow profits.

Our society, structured from the ground up, is driven by profit, often to the detriment of humanity. Elected officials frequently become mere puppets for corporate interests, with lobbyists shaping legislation in exchange for financial gain. While not everything is bleak, the overall picture is concerning.

I’m not against capitalism per se, but I advocate for a more balanced approach that considers both personal gain and the collective good. This balance often manifests as taxation, where the profits should be shared more equitably.

I envision a government that actively works to enhance and safeguard the lives of its citizens, which seems essential in a nation that champions freedom and equality. This is not achieved through the outdated idea of trickle-down economics but by ensuring that everyone’s basic needs are prioritized before anyone can claim a larger share of resources.

We often find ourselves sold complex solutions wrapped in technological jargon, yet the solutions to our challenges are straightforward. We desire low crime rates and safe communities, clean air and water, affordable housing, a thriving economy, and a knowledgeable electorate capable of making informed choices.

Imagine redirecting a few trillion dollars—funds we often squander—toward improving citizens' lives. This could include universal basic income, affordable housing, top-notch public education, and comprehensive healthcare. We could completely revamp public safety to ensure law enforcement truly serves the community. Any initiative aimed at enhancing public welfare should either be nationalized or heavily regulated.

If we were to implement these changes, wealth disparities would still exist, but the average citizen would experience an improved quality of life. Our government invests billions in research and development to ostensibly benefit society, yet the returns often mean more wealth for a select few—not the average taxpayer—while providing superficial products like unnecessary 4K TVs.

We tend to overlook simple solutions because they don’t align with private industry’s profit motives. Here’s a revelation: governments shouldn’t aim to be profitable; their primary role is to serve the populace. We don’t need faster cars; we need improved public transportation. We don’t require better artificial sweeteners; we need access to clean water. This "every person for themselves" mentality is detrimental to our nation.
