Over the course of two painstaking years, the stadium sought solutions to the pressing issue of recycling contemporary football pitches, which typically combine natural grass with synthetic materials. Although these hybrid pitches are designed for enhanced durability and adaptability to diverse weather conditions, their disposal poses a serious environmental challenge, as the plastic elements do not decompose naturally, often leading to waste in landfills.

Determined to tackle this issue, the team at Wembley has devised a creative solution that facilitates the extraction and repurposing of the pitch's plastic components. Remarkably, they have produced a bench made entirely from this recycled material, which carries the legacy of celebrated players like Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Lauren James, and Mary Earps, who have graced its famous field.

Karl Standley, Grounds Manager at Wembley Stadium, shared insights on the hurdles faced during this initiative, stating, "Extracting the plastic from a hybrid pitch is notoriously difficult…but we were determined to find a sustainable answer." This significant achievement highlights Wembley's unwavering commitment to eco-friendliness, a mission that began with the stadium's establishment in 2007 and has evolved to include numerous green initiatives.

Collaborating with recycling experts Circular 11, Wembley Stadium has not only developed a revolutionary recycling process but also set the stage for a more sustainable approach to stadium management. Connor Winter from Circular 11 noted, "The full circle pitch…demonstrates…the potential for composite technology to transform previously unrecyclable plastic into a resource."
