The Transformative Impact of Embracing Simplicity in Life

Written on

Chapter 1: Embracing Simplicity

The annual inspection was an event dreaded by everyone in the police department, myself included. This two-day ordeal began with an early morning evaluation of the officers. The police chief, accompanied by a guest inspector, meticulously examined each member of the force.

A Lieutenant was tasked with recording our performance on a clipboard as the Chief and inspector inspected our uniforms, equipment, and overall appearance. The event attracted city council members, government officials, family, and friends, who gathered to witness the morning review. Speeches by the Mayor, Police Chief, and the guest inspector followed the inspection.

After the troop review, attention shifted to our patrol vehicles, motorcycles, ATVs, and other gear. The remainder of the inspection involved thorough checks of indoor and outdoor facilities, extending over the next day as well. Every division within the department faced scrutiny, with files reviewed and the integrity of the evidence room and armory closely monitored, even checking for dust with a white glove.

Weeks of preparation led up to this two-day inspection, prompting complaints and frustrations among the staff. Yet, the experience provided us with invaluable insights.

Every inspection revealed inefficiencies and offered opportunities to streamline our operations.

Section 1.1: The Benefits of Decluttering

If you've ever spent time cleaning out your closet, you may understand the relief we felt once the inspection concluded. While the hard work of organizing and paring down our belongings isn't enjoyable, the satisfaction and sense of freedom that follow are remarkable.

This annual event was about more than just showcasing pride in our department; it served as a catalyst for decluttering and refining our processes. Each inspection revealed areas for improvement, prompting us to work smarter.

Later in my career, I upheld the tradition of annual inspections as police chief, recognizing their importance in fostering efficiency and clarity.

The police department encompassed various divisions, including communications, administration, investigations, services, and operations. The inspections allowed us to pinpoint each division's goals and eliminate unnecessary elements.

As Bruce Lee wisely said, "It is not a daily increase, but a daily decrease. Hack away at the inessentials."

By eliminating the unnecessary in my professional life, I also began to evaluate my personal time commitments. This led to declining obligations that complicated my existence and decluttering my home and art studio to focus on what truly mattered.

I sold unused art supplies, donated books that no longer captivated me, and let go of hobbies that distracted me from my passion for writing and art. The more I simplified, the more liberated I felt.

Chapter 2: The Complexity of Modern Life

Our contemporary lives seem increasingly convoluted. The pressures of social media, information overload, and the fear of missing out often lead us to accumulate more complexity, resulting in stress and burnout.

For instance, I reluctantly created Instagram and Facebook accounts to promote my creative work. Nowadays, a website alone isn't sufficient; one must navigate social media platforms to reach an audience.

However, managing these accounts can be burdensome, consuming valuable time that could be spent honing one's craft. Currently, I'm working on my second book—a collection of my essays from the last two years—which requires me to learn formatting rules and design a cover.

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication," Clare Boothe Luce once said.

While there are numerous YouTube tutorials available, they often consume more time than they save. To streamline the process, I plan to hire a professional for the formatting tasks, allowing me to focus on what I excel at.

Section 2.1: The Pursuit of Simplified Tools

When I first ventured into photography, a friend recommended the Leica Q2 camera for its simplicity and ease of use. However, its hefty price tag made it unattainable.

I opted for the more affordable Sony A6600, which, although a beautiful compact camera, presents a complex menu system. Adjusting settings like exposure and ISO requires navigating through layers of menus, unlike the straightforward Leica Q2.

As Henry David Thoreau stated, "Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify, simplify."

While learning the Sony A6600 has its challenges, I often find that overly complicated technology detracts from the joy of creation.

Photographer exploring simplicity in tools

Smartphones have surged in popularity because they allow users to capture and share images effortlessly. Though high-end cameras may produce superior images, they come with complexities that can be off-putting.

As technology evolves, I find myself preferring simplified tools that enhance my creative work without unnecessary complications.

Section 2.2: The Elegance of Minimalism

My artistic approach has shifted over the years toward simplicity. My painting palette now consists primarily of primary colors and white, leading to more monochromatic creations.

I enjoy the elegance of black and white art, reminiscent of the political cartoons I adored as a child. This preference extends to photography, where I favor monochrome images for their timeless quality.

Simplicity offers liberation. I opt for the straightforward pleasure of writing in journals and using fountain pens over the complexities of camera settings or social media dynamics.

Elegant simplicity in creative work

My wardrobe consists of versatile, solid-colored pieces that facilitate travel and reduce packing hassles. As Albert Einstein said, "Possessions, outward success, publicity, luxury — to me these have always been contemptible. I believe that a simple and unassuming manner of life is best for everyone, best for both the body and the mind."

I regularly eliminate unnecessary apps from my devices and strive to declutter my digital space. By minimizing distractions, I can focus on what truly matters: my health, family, and creative pursuits.

How about you? What complexities and distractions are obstructing your path to fulfillment? Consider what digital clutter, overcommitments, and unnecessary obligations may be hindering your best life.

Start simplifying, and you may discover that the world opens up before you.
