# From Struggles to Success: An Introverted Entrepreneur's Journey

Chapter 1: A Journey Begins
The path to success isn’t always straightforward, and for me, it began with a series of setbacks. After receiving a medical discharge from the Army at just 20, I faced numerous challenges: unnecessary surgeries, workplace abuse, and a significant loss of self-esteem. Finding employment proved difficult; hiring managers often overlooked me due to my military background, leaving me feeling marginalized.
Despite being labeled a malingerer and hearing doctors suggest my issues were psychological, I persevered, advocating for myself in front of medical professionals. I eventually discovered a long-standing back injury and committed to recovery. Working a 9-to-5 job in child protection, I simultaneously dedicated my mornings and evenings to fitness, achieving my best physical condition yet.
My dream was to become a Federal Agent. I spent a year navigating a convoluted application process, using my vacation days for testing in Sydney and Canberra. I successfully passed every stage: the online application, assessments, fitness tests, group exercises, panel interviews, and psychological evaluations. Yet, despite meeting the medical requirements, I was told I hadn’t been fit long enough, and my application was rejected.
At that moment, I felt utterly defeated.
However, I decided to pursue a position with the state police. After an initial mishap in my online application, which led to disqualification, I had to wait a month to reapply. Just days before my application window reopened, I had a troubling confrontation with my partner, and as I drove distractedly, I was pulled over for speeding. Tears streamed down my face, knowing this would further delay my aspirations to join law enforcement.
Following this emotional rollercoaster, I resolved not to repeat the painful application process. Instead, I returned to my job in child protection, where I earned a temporary team leader position that I thoroughly enjoyed. However, after a reshuffling of roles, I faced a choice: either revert to my previous position or apply for a more demanding team leader role that required a two-hour commute. I chose to resign without a backup plan.
I applied for a government position in my field, despite it not being my ideal job. After jumping through numerous hoops, I was offered a position with a salary that was laughably low compared to my experience. When I inquired about it, I was informed that my past experience didn’t count during salary negotiations, prompting me to decline the offer.
Feeling adrift, I remembered that sneaky personal training course I had pursued. That’s when my entrepreneurial journey truly began. While attempting to establish my business, I encountered several challenges:
- I spent four years living with family and my partner’s relatives.
- I incurred significant expenses without clear returns.
- I took a bicycle courier job just to make ends meet.
- I experienced a major depressive episode that coincided with the closure of my struggling fitness business.
- My partner worked over 45 hours a week to support us while my cycling income funded my therapy sessions.
I don’t share this to seek sympathy; rather, I want to illustrate that even in your lowest moments, there is always a way forward. My depressive episode became a turning point, prompting me to seek help from a psychiatrist, psychologist, business coach, and mindset coach. I began working on rebuilding myself, not just my career.
Since December 2018, I have:
- Rebuilt my self-worth and confidence.
- Proposed to my wonderful fiancé and maintained a healthy relationship.
- Moved back to Australia from the UK, where we purchased a home.
- Established a loving family with three dogs, seven cats, fish, and a rainbow lorikeet.
- Reconnected with meaningful friendships and distanced myself from toxic ones.
- Completed a Master’s in Communication (Digital Media).
- Volunteered as a firefighter to give back to my community.
- Contributed to developing a successful digital marketing agency.
- Created job opportunities for myself and others through my venture, Introvert Agency.
- Most importantly, learned to love myself.
Seven years ago, I doubted any of this would be possible. I felt inadequate, but through hard work and persistence, I began to see a shift. First, I regained my self-belief, and subsequently, others began to respond positively to me, changing my interactions with challenging situations.
Many times, I questioned my decision to leave a stable job for entrepreneurship. However, looking back, I recognize that all the struggles and hard work were worthwhile.
As Gary Vee wisely says:
"Be who you are, not who you wish you were."
Today, I feel as though I am finally living the life I was meant to lead.
Whether you are contemplating starting your own business, are in the thick of building one, or are thriving in your venture, keep pushing forward. Persistence is key, as giving up is the only way to truly fail.
To wrap up, let me share some inspiration from Eminem:
"I'm not afraid (I'm not afraid)
To take a stand (to take a stand)
Everybody (Everybody)
Come take my hand (come take my hand)
We'll walk this road together, through the storm
Whatever weather, cold or warm
Just letting you know that you're not alone."
