Chapter 1: The Reality of Earnings Fluctuation

Is anyone else experiencing a challenging month on Medium, or is it just me?

The idea that progress is always straightforward is a myth. My earnings on Medium this month serve as a clear reminder of that fact. Let’s take a look at how my earnings have evolved:

As illustrated, my journey has been marked by distinct phases: Getting acclimated in February, a significant increase in March, stabilization in April, another surge in May, and a steady phase in June. The expectation was that July would bring another leap forward.

However, that wasn’t the case. July turned out to be a disappointing month, with earnings plummeting to less than one-third of what I had made the previous month. What could explain this downturn?

While I could cite various reasons such as the summer slowdown in readership, my hectic training schedule for a half-marathon, or a holiday back to Ireland that limited my writing time, those are not the real culprits.

The truth is glaring: my earnings have suffered because I haven’t dedicated enough time and effort to my writing. It’s a hard pill to swallow, but it’s the reality.

I refuse to place the blame on Medium, external circumstances, or anyone else. The reasons behind my lack of commitment are simply excuses. If I aspire to be a successful writer and earn from my craft, I must commit myself wholeheartedly, regardless of the obstacles.

That’s the approach I intend to adopt this coming month. July was a setback, but August is set to be a period of resurgence and progress.

Progress is rarely a straight line; the key now is to ensure that this month’s dip is merely a minor hiccup in an otherwise upward trajectory rather than the beginning of a decline in my writing journey.
