My Updated Everyday Carry Essentials: A Mid-2022 Review

Written on

Chapter 1: An Overview of My Everyday Carry

In the midst of 2022, I've made several adjustments to my essential items when heading out. I believe it’s important to share these updates, as they reflect my personal preferences and practical needs. Some changes are evident from my previous posts, while others stem from my attempts to find replacements that either succeeded or reverted back to my original choices.

The selection of items that accompany you daily is crucial. I strive to maintain a streamlined carry, opting out of items like flashlights or knives since they aren't necessary for my lifestyle. As a self-proclaimed geek, I focus on what truly meets my needs.

An overview of my everyday carry essentials.

Section 1.1: My Smartphone Choice

My go-to device is the iPhone 12 Mini, a topic I've discussed multiple times. After selling my iPhone 13 Pro, I can confidently say that I’m enjoying the compact size of the Mini. I plan to upgrade to the iPhone 13 Mini once the iPhone 14 is released, allowing me to snag it at a better price.

One downside I've encountered with the iPhone 12 Mini is its limited storage capacity, which restricts my ability to install the iOS 16 Beta. Additionally, the RAM seems insufficient, leading to frequent app closures when multitasking. For instance, when listening to podcasts on Overcast, if I pause for too long, the app may close, causing unexpected music playback instead.

Even with these quirks, I appreciate the convenience of the smaller size. Friends and family often comment on how tiny it is, sometimes joking that it resembles a child’s toy. Despite the playful jabs, its size is just right for me.

Using a MagSafe Popsocket for better grip.

I've also mentioned my favorite MagSafe accessory, the Popsocket, which I find incredibly useful. Although it may be more suited for the larger iPhone models, it still fits well with my Mini. I've learned the importance of using a screen protector, not for shattering concerns, but to prevent scratches that diminish display quality.

Section 1.2: My Wallet Dilemma

Finding the perfect wallet has been a challenge lately. I initially tried the MagSafe Wallet but faced issues with its Find My feature and my need for MagSafe for the Popsocket. I reverted to my old Coach bifold wallet, which felt bulky compared to the slim alternatives I had become accustomed to.

After experimenting with several options, including the Bellroy Note Wallet and Distil Union’s Wally, I returned to my trusty Coach card holder. While it may not be the newest style, its durability has proven invaluable. Despite its age, it holds up well against wear and tear, making it my daily choice.

Section 1.3: Keys and Organization

In my previous EDC update, I highlighted my reliance on the OrbitKey Organizer for my keys. This compact, high-quality organizer simplifies carrying my keys. Recently, I added the Idakekiy Dual Carabiner to my setup, allowing me to clip my keys to a belt loop.

While it has its benefits, I've found the carabiner can be noisy at times. I'm still experimenting with the best way to carry it comfortably. The AirTag attached to my keys has been particularly useful for tracking, especially with a curious baby around.

Chapter 2: My Watch Collection

In my journey back to traditional watches, I sold my Apple Watch and embraced a simpler approach. My current favorite is a Seiko DateJust Mod, purchased from Etsy. While it may not be a luxury Rolex, it delivers the style and functionality I desire at a fraction of the cost.

This Seiko watch is versatile enough for both casual and formal settings. It pairs well with various outfits, making it a staple in my collection. Alongside it, I have my Seiko 5 SNK809 and Casio F-84W, which I wear during yard work or casual days at home.

Hall of Fame: AirPods and Sunglasses

The final two items in my everyday carry are my AirPods Pro and Ray-Ban New Wayfarers, both of which have been consistent features in my EDC. The AirPods Pro have significantly improved my listening experience, particularly with their comfort and sound quality. I no longer experience the discomfort I faced with previous models.

My Ray-Bans are equally reliable, providing excellent UV protection. Although I strive for minimalism in my carry, these two items are essential for my daily outings.

As a self-identified geek, I recognize that my carry may not be the most tech-forward, but it suits my lifestyle perfectly. I don’t plan to make further changes to my EDC for the year but will remain open to new alternatives as they arise. Here’s to what 2023 holds for my everyday essentials.
