Chapter 1: Introduction to Obsidian Shortcuts

Obsidian has become integral to my daily routines. I keep it constantly open on my desktop for note-taking, information tracking, and daily management. For more insights on how I utilize Obsidian, feel free to check out my detailed list.

To maintain my workflow, it’s crucial to switch to Obsidian quickly, complete my tasks, and switch back without needing to reach for the mouse. Whenever I have to grab the mouse, my flow is disrupted, leading to wasted time searching for the cursor. This is why I've found the following ten keyboard shortcuts to be incredibly beneficial for optimizing my use of Obsidian.

Although these shortcuts are designed for Mac users, Windows users can easily substitute the Command key (⌘) with the CTRL key for equivalent functionality. I hope you find these shortcuts as advantageous as I do.

Section 1.1: Open Command Palette (⌘ + P)

This is the most essential shortcut. If you ever find yourself unsure of how to navigate Obsidian, you can always locate your desired command in the Command Palette. Simply press ⌘ + P and type in your command or the name of a plugin.

Section 1.2: Create New Note (⌘ + N)

Creating notes is the essence of Obsidian, so it’s no surprise that there are various ways to initiate a new note. To do this without moving your hands from the keyboard, use the shortcut ⌘ + N.

Bonus Tip: For generating a new note in a separate pane next to your current work, use ⌘ + ⇧ + N.

Section 1.3: Open Note in New Pane (⌘ + Click)

Although not a traditional keyboard shortcut, you can open an existing note in a new pane by holding ⌘ and clicking on the relevant link. This allows you to view the note you're working on alongside additional content.

Section 1.4: Close a Pane (⌘ + W)

Once you've opened notes in new panes, closing them is simple. Just hold down ⌘ + W, and the active pane will close automatically.

Section 1.5: Reopen the Last Closed Pane (⌘ + ⇧ + W)

If you've accidentally closed a pane, the shortcut ⌘ + ⇧ + W will help you avoid navigating back to File Explorer, as it reopens the last closed note.

Section 1.6: Insert a Template into Existing Note (⌘ + T)

Before using this shortcut, ensure the Templates plugin is enabled (found under Core Plugins) and you've created some templates. Once set up, you can insert a previously made template into your note using ⌘ + T.

Section 1.7: Search for a Word or Phrase (⌘ + ⇧ + F)

Like many Mac applications, Obsidian allows you to search for words or phrases within your current note using ⌘ + F. However, for a broader search across your entire vault, use the combination ⌘ + ⇧ + F.

Section 1.8: Search for a Specific Note (⌘ + O)

As your vault expands, finding a specific note can become challenging. The Quick Switcher feature is invaluable here. Press ⌘ + O to start typing the name of your note. Thanks to Obsidian's autocomplete, you'll find what you need with just a few keystrokes.

Section 1.9: Check Vault Graphs (⌘ + G)

One of the standout features of Obsidian is its graph view, which helps users visualize how their notes interconnect. While you can access this by clicking on the Graph View button, you can also do so quickly using ⌘ + G.

Section 1.10: Open Settings (⌘ + ,)

Obsidian offers extensive customization options, from plugins to themes and functionalities. You can access the settings panel from the left sidebar or, more efficiently, by pressing ⌘ + ,.
