A Joyful Approach to Writing: 7 Steps to Cultivate Your Passion
Written on
Chapter 1: Embracing the Joy of Writing
For those who write, the allure of financial gain can often feel overwhelming. Headlines abound, enticing writers with promises of increased earnings through specific advice. While the temptation to chase monetary success is understandable, it can come at the expense of the joy that originally fueled our passion for writing.
Ironically, many individuals who leave traditional jobs to pursue writing often carry with them the same mindset associated with the 9 to 5 grind—akin to a former smoker who, despite quitting, still carries the scent of cigarettes. Every platform where writers share their work serves as a community hub, creating an environment that reflects the collective mindset of its contributors. Unfortunately, the prevailing scent here is one of “success,” overshadowing the delightful aroma of joy.
This shift is concerning, especially since numerous writers aim to inspire joy in both themselves and their audiences. To sustain this joy, we need sources of inspiration that transcend the typical success-driven narratives.
Section 1.1: Breaking Free from the 9 to 5 Mindset
The term "9 to 5" has evolved to symbolize everything we wish to avoid in our professional lives. However, escaping this mindset isn't merely about adopting flexible hours; it's a mental shift that requires a decisive leap—much like jumping off a moving train before it plunges over a cliff. It's a significant transition that demands preparation for the challenges of self-direction, far removed from the comforts of a structured job.
Once you take that leap and reclaim your joy, it becomes a guiding compass, enabling you to find your path toward creative success without sacrificing your spirit.
CJ James, a fellow writer, aptly noted the difficulty of resisting the urge to track metrics on platforms like Medium. It requires conscious effort to prioritize genuine expression over external validation.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Inner Work of Joy
Reclaiming joy as writers entails a fundamental redefinition of what joy means. It isn't an easy, accessible option like a cheap thrill; rather, it requires effort and intention. Joy can be compared to a sleek rowing shell, helping us navigate against the relentless tide of societal expectations surrounding "success." This process necessitates teamwork with fellow writers, as we synchronize our efforts to advance toward a shared goal: preserving joy.
What collaborative actions can we undertake as writers to secure this victory in joy? Surprisingly, the answer may contradict our conventional understanding of joy. While it is indeed a natural human right, cultivating joy often demands discipline and intentional practice.
Section 1.2: The Creator I Aspire to Be
Since actively engaging in writing on this platform, I've found myself caught in the emotional rollercoaster of fluctuating statistics. I've unwittingly tethered my mental well-being to these numbers, watching my spirits rise and fall with audience engagement. This isn't the creator's life I envision.
To maintain my focus and joy, I've devised a structured plan.
Chapter 2: The Write enCOURAGEMENT—A 7-Week Journey to Joy
This self-paced coaching outline is designed to help anyone rediscover their passion for writing.
Week 1: Stream of Consciousness Writing
Engage in daily stream of consciousness writing, freeing yourself from the inner critic that stifles creativity.

Update your "About Me" section to truly reflect your current mission and authentic self as a writer. Aim for a version that feels bold and uniquely yours.
Week 3: Embrace Risk
Identify three areas you've been avoiding. Write freely about them and commit to taking specific actions to confront these fears.
Week 4: Disconnect from Statistics
For an entire week, refrain from checking your writing metrics. Focus instead on genuine engagement with your readers.
Week 5: Engage with Others
Dedicate your writing time to commenting on others' works, contributing meaningful insights and sparking conversations.
Week 6: Explore New Tags
Challenge yourself to write with unconventional tags, expanding your creative horizons.
Week 7: Publish What Scares You
Choose a topic that excites yet intimidates you, and fully immerse yourself in writing about it.
As I reflect on the insights shared by Dave Karpowicz in the comments, I recognize the profound connection between joy and community. Writers inherently seek connection through their words, and this shared experience is what ignites joy.
This plan is meant for writers who aspire to infuse their work with the courage of the human spirit, encouraging others to seek fulfillment and vitality. If you resonate with this vision, I hope this guide inspires you to nurture your joy and share it with the world.
