<Exploring Your Ideal Familiar: A Tarot Card Selection Guide>

“Someone’s gonna end up crying, probably me” - Salem (Sabrina the Teenage Witch)
I want to start by sharing my affection for everything mystical and Halloween-related. Crafting these readings brings me joy, and I strive to make them both enjoyable and sincere.
I truly appreciate you taking the time to explore my readings. I provide in-depth tarot sessions, and if you're interested, feel free to reach out at [email protected].
This reading is general and timeless. I recognize that Tarot may not resonate with everyone, and I thank you for your understanding.
Any donations or tips are welcome at $candlelittarot. Additionally, I host a podcast called Candlelit Tarot, where I release episodes bi-weekly. Thank you once more for visiting, and let’s delve right in…
To define a familiar, I’ve always understood it as a witch’s animal companion, with famous examples being Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Hedwig from Harry Potter.
In the context of Western demonology, a familiar is described as a small animal or imp that serves a witch, often believed to be gifted by the devil or inherited from another witch. Familiars were typically depicted as low-ranking demons that could take various animal forms, including toads, dogs, insects, or black cats. They were sometimes portrayed as fantastical creatures, a mix of different animals.
Traditionally, it was thought that familiars sustained themselves by drawing blood from a witch's fingers or other protrusions on her body, such as moles or warts (yikes!). During the witch trials in Europe from the 15th to the 17th centuries, suspected witches were examined for “teats” used to feed their familiars, which, alongside the devil’s brand marks, were considered strong indications of guilt.
> A familiar or imp represents a spirit that embodies an animal form. These spirits often serve as companions to witches, offering support, protection, and guidance. Familiars can appear sporadically or remain close allies for years, regardless of the duration, their influence is significant.
# How This Reading Works…
I will draw five cards, and you will choose a number from 1 to 5.
Begin by taking a few deep breaths, perhaps closing your eyes to focus on your desired card. Then, select a number between 1 and 5 and locate your group below.
# Group One
BAT
Bats are often viewed as “negative omens” primarily due to their unusual, rodent-like appearance. They have also been associated with a witch’s ‘alter ego’ when an escape is needed.
Similar to how vampires are said to transform into bats, these nocturnal creatures symbolize the lunar cycle and nighttime patterns. Bats encourage you to tap into those deep-seated emotions that may be buried within.
Tarot
Four of Imps Reversed
I chose my Halloween Tarot deck for this reading, as it features bats and imps, making it a fun option. The Four of Imps, akin to the Four of Wands, signifies changes and cycles in your life or those around you.
This card may also suggest a need for enhanced communication in specific areas. Its appearance alongside the bats is intriguing, as it alludes to cycles and transitions. If you’re feeling lost or uncertain about your next steps, know that it’s natural to feel confused during challenging times.
Expect answers to come your way. Pay attention to any coincidences, as they are unlikely to be mere happenstance.
# Group Two
DRAGONFLY
I was pleasantly surprised to discover that dragonflies can also be considered familiars. This aligns with the dragonfly card in my Spirit of the Animals Oracle deck, symbolizing transformation, wisdom, and skill.
Tarot
Ten of Imps Reversed
This card corresponds to the Ten of Wands in reverse, indicating avoidance. Are there situations you’d prefer to ignore? Are you intentionally sidestepping tasks or perhaps a person? This situation can manifest in various ways, suggesting you might be keeping busy to avoid dealing with underlying matters.
If this resonates with you, remember that avoidance is not a long-term solution; you must eventually confront what needs to be addressed. (I’m working on this too.) Just think about how it would feel to have already faced it.
# Group Three
MICE/RAT
Despite being rodents, mice and rats are adaptable and resilient, embodying patience and fertility. This reminds me of Splinter from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Tarot
The Tower Reversed
The Tower in reverse signifies a fear of change, which is intriguing since rats and mice are known for their adaptability. You also possess this ability, even if you haven’t recognized it, particularly if you feel uneasy about change. It’s okay to feel this way; try to center yourself through deep breaths and engage in activities that evoke comfort.
# Group Four
FERRET
I was initially taken aback by this choice, but ferrets are indeed intelligent creatures and can be quite capable. They are often labeled as “tricksters.”
Tarot
Temperance Reversed
When Temperance appears in reverse, it may indicate imbalances in your life. It could also imply impatience. It’s natural to want things to unfold in your favor. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to lose touch with patience.
Time management can be challenging, but with practice, you can accomplish much without rushing. Remember, haste can lead to heightened stress and anxiety.
# Group Five
GOAT
This choice doesn’t surprise me, as goats have historically been seen as both allies and sacrifices. This animal is strongly tied to the Greek God Pan, embodying a half-goat, half-man essence. A goat as a familiar encourages a unique perspective, urging its witch to embrace her individuality.
Side note: Whenever I envision a witchy goat, I can’t help but recall that striking black goat from *THE VVITCH.
Tarot
The Star
The Star is one of my favorites, symbolizing hope and spirituality. This beautiful card often appears at just the right moment, reminding you not to lose faith in your current path. You might feel as though your efforts are futile, but persistence is key. Consider modifying your routine or approach as needed, but don’t give up! You’re on the verge of something significant! (A reminder I also need to hear!)
Many thanks to Freedom Hub.
