Chapter 1: The Nature of Knowledge

Recently, I stumbled upon a captivating book titled Travelling with the Waves of Consciousness. Within its pages, I found a thought-provoking statement:

“If you only accept what you already know, you will never find anything new.” — Sonja Klopčić

This notion struck a chord with me, especially as I grapple with a persistent question: Why do we often dismiss the unfamiliar while holding tightly to what is familiar, validated, and established? This mindset limits our ability to uncover new insights.

Does this imply that if something cannot be validated or confirmed by science, it simply does not exist? Or is it more accurate to assert that science may lack the current means to prove certain phenomena?

At its core, I believe that to prove a concept, one must first grasp it. Thus, how can science affirm or negate what it does not fully comprehend?

A transformative idea is one that shifts existing beliefs fundamentally. This signifies a substantial alteration rather than mere tweaks or enhancements. Just moments before such an idea is recognized as revolutionary, it is often dismissed as absurd, foolish, or unattainable.

As Steven Kotler articulates in his book The Art of Impossible:

“...history is littered with ‘the impossible’. Our past is a graveyard for ideas that have held this title.”

There was a time when some of the most pivotal breakthroughs in our civilization were seen as outlandish and impossible before being accepted as groundbreaking ideas.

Yet, as a society, we frequently continue to reject what remains unproven. I suspect that many scientific achievements faced skepticism prior to their validation. Not to mention the fate of visionaries throughout history who were persecuted for their groundbreaking assertions.

It seems we have not evolved significantly in this regard. Do we still take pleasure in intimidating and punishing those who challenge the status quo?
