Chapter 1: Initial Impressions of the HomePod
A few weeks ago, I experienced the unboxing and initial listen of the new HomePod for the very first time. To be honest, my expectations were somewhat tempered. There has been a significant amount of hype in the Apple community regarding their audio capabilities. While Apple products do manage to enhance the sound of small devices beyond what you'd anticipate, we should remain realistic. For instance, the MacBook Pro doesn't quite match the sound quality of a traditional HiFi system, despite some claims suggesting otherwise. Likewise, the HomePod mini is commendable for its compact size, but it won't leave you breathless.
Chapter 2: My Strategy for Integrating the HomePod
Interestingly, the large HomePod has a way of growing on you with extended listening (and not being seated just a foot away, as I initially was). This realization has sparked hope for my plans over the coming months. I've outlined my HomePod strategy into three distinct phases, and I am eager to share them and seek your input.
Section 2.1: Bidding Farewell to Alexa
Currently, we are a household reliant on Alexa. We have an Echo Studio in the kitchen, which closely resembles the HomePod, and an Echo Dot in the dining area. Additionally, there's an Echo Dot for our son's nursery, still in its box.
Despite being fully invested in Alexa, our usage has remained quite limited, primarily for timers, weather updates, and playing music in the kitchen. We haven't explored the full potential of home automation.
The lack of interest in expanding our Alexa setup stems from two main issues: I found it cumbersome and unreliable to maintain, and the sound quality of Alexa devices was disappointing. Having previously invested in Sonos for better audio, I am looking to transition to Siri and incorporate HomePods throughout my home. The large HomePod will take center stage in the kitchen, while the smaller HomePod mini will find a new home in the dining area.
Section 2.2: The Case for a Stereo Pair
“Prepare yourself for the advice to try a stereo pair. It’s a common recommendation.” I can’t recall who said that, but they were spot on. My initial impressions video of the 2023 HomePod was flooded with viewers suggesting I purchase a second unit.
This isn't a trivial investment, as it would set me back £600 for a pair of Siri speakers. Finding a suitable location for them is another challenge. Our living room features a built-in 5.1 surround sound system, making the addition of a stereo pair of HomePods impractical. Moreover, placing them in the kitchen wouldn’t maximize their potential, as this setup thrives in a more traditional listening environment alongside an Apple TV.
Section 2.3: Diving into HomeKit
The final phase of my HomePod journey is both thrilling and intimidating. Apple has always been quite enthusiastic about HomeKit, and you might be led to believe that your home could soon resemble something from a futuristic show.
However, the truth is that creating a HomeKit-enabled environment requires careful selection from a myriad of compatible devices available in the market. While some are undoubtedly fantastic, there are also many that could lead to frustration. This uncertainty is why I have left this phase for last, and I would greatly appreciate your recommendations if you've successfully navigated the world of HomeKit.
Final Thoughts
As I continue to use the 2023 HomePod in my studio, I find myself growing attached to it. I anticipate missing it once it finally makes its way to my home. This leads me to consider outfitting my studio with HomePods as well. Perhaps the stereo pair will find its place there!
Will this commitment to Apple’s ecosystem pay off? Only time will tell, but I foresee an exciting journey ahead.
