£%#$ Approval: Encourage Authenticity in Your Children

Written on

Chapter 1: Embracing Authenticity

It's essential to help your children understand that not everyone will appreciate them, and that’s completely okay. Many of us have experienced the desire to fit in and be liked; it's a natural impulse. However, this pursuit often leads us astray.

We must instill in our children that they don't need to contort themselves to earn anyone's approval. Our priority should be to cultivate self-love, rather than seeking validation from others.

The world is filled with diverse individuals, and it’s unrealistic to expect everyone to become a close friend. It's crucial for our kids to grasp this concept early on, preventing them from squandering their energy trying to please everyone.

Think about it: if you dedicate all your time to seeking approval, you risk presenting a version of yourself that isn’t genuine. You end up with a diluted representation, merely to conform. What’s the point of that? You lose your true self in the process, all for the sake of someone else's approval. Forget that.

We should encourage our kids to embrace their true selves. If someone doesn’t appreciate their uniqueness, that’s their issue—not ours. If they don’t like your child's style, opinions, or values, that’s on them. The important thing is for our children to remain true to themselves.

Self-worth is paramount. We need to teach them that their value doesn't hinge on others' opinions; it comes from within. They are enough just as they are, with no need to alter themselves to fit someone else's expectations.

Modeling this behavior begins with us. We must stand firm in our identities, avoiding the trap of trying to please everyone. Our children are observant; they will pick up on our actions. If they witness us worrying about others’ perceptions, they are likely to emulate that behavior.

When my daughter grows up, I want her to understand her inherent brilliance, regardless of others' opinions. If someone fails to recognize that, it’s their loss—not hers. There’s no need for her to change a single thing.

This message needs to be communicated clearly and consistently.

Additionally, fostering resilience is vital. When children recognize their worth, they can better handle rejection. If someone doesn’t like them, it doesn’t have to affect them deeply—they can simply move on. They understand their value and remain steadfast.

However, let’s be real; the environment can be challenging, especially with the influence of social media. Everyone seems to present a flawless version of their lives, which can be misleading. This narrative can lead our kids to feel inadequate.

We must remind them that no one is perfect. Everyone has their struggles and imperfections, and that’s what makes us human. It’s essential to embrace authenticity.

If you’re a parent or interact with children, ensure they understand that they don’t need to change for anyone. They are perfectly acceptable just as they are. If someone fails to recognize that, it’s a loss for them.

Our purpose isn’t to please everyone; it’s to lead fulfilling lives, to remain true to ourselves, and to pursue happiness. If someone doesn’t appreciate that, it’s their concern—not ours.

We move forward, staying true to who we are.

So, let’s commit to nurturing our children to be strong, self-assured, and unapologetically themselves. That’s the essence of it. No need for alterations or conformity—just being themselves and loving who they are.

Keep thriving and inspiring others.
