Chapter 1: The Blocking Policy Proposal

Recently, Elon Musk suggested a controversial new feature for Twitter that would eliminate the option for users to block others. While this might seem like an innovative approach, it’s possible he discovered that his own account is among the most blocked on the platform. Personally, I blocked him last year due to the growing frustrations with his actions.

It appears Musk may not have fully considered the implications of this policy. Both Apple and Google’s app stores mandate that apps featuring user-generated content must enable blocking functionalities. Given that these platforms dominate the mobile market, Musk’s app could be severely limited if he proceeds with this plan. I certainly won’t be modifying my device just for "X".

I look forward to the day when he faces the consequences of this decision, likely making excuses to withdraw the proposal. Twitter has devolved into a haven for bots and fake accounts, often utilizing AI-generated avatars.

Musk’s understanding of the social media business model seems flawed, particularly given that he acquired Twitter for four times its estimated worth. Just as the platform finally began to turn a profit after years of struggle, he reversed that trend, causing advertisers to flee. They have raised issues about their ads appearing alongside extremist content, contributing to a significant decline in ad revenue. Although I subscribe to the platform to ensure my posts gain visibility, I have no intention of renewing my subscription once it expires in April 2024.

Twitter was designed as an advertising platform, yet Musk’s policies have alienated advertisers by allowing controversial content to flourish. While far-right groups represent about 20% of the U.S. electorate, their consumer base is much smaller. The middle-class moderates, who advertisers aim to reach, are not well-served by the current direction of Twitter.

Musk seems to be aligning himself with conspiracy theorists and right-wing groups, garnering support mainly from cryptocurrency enthusiasts and others involved in dubious schemes. The interaction on social media from these groups often revolves around scamming and trolling more moderate users. By pushing away these demographics, Musk risks turning Twitter into yet another platform like Truth Social, where engagement dwindles without the presence of opposing views.

The proposed "no blocking" policy is unlikely to materialize. Losing access to both Apple and Android users would cripple Twitter's audience. However, this proposal has reignited discussions about Musk, providing him with a fleeting moment in the spotlight. Ultimately, it’s plausible that he will modify the policy to prevent users from blocking HIM specifically, and it remains to be seen how Apple and Google will respond.
