Creating Thursday: Reflections on Our Autism Journey

Chapter 1: A New Day Begins
This morning began on a positive note. After a good night's sleep, Owen appeared more relaxed, with fewer instances of his repetitive speech patterns—though it's a small change, I'm grateful for it. For the first time in ages, I managed to sleep through most of the night as well.
Since he woke up late, Owen had limited time to enjoy his tablet, but I'm in favor of his extra rest. While he wasn't thrilled with my clothing choices, we managed to sort that out. Interestingly, he did manage to put his shoes on the correct feet, though he still walked awkwardly on the back of them.
When waiting for the bus, he began discussing a bus driver from the past. Thankfully, after I explained our plans for the upcoming days, he shifted his focus. As we waited, he reminisced about his previous bus stop, which serves as a reminder of how far he has come.
Owen has been expressing interest in getting a buzz cut. In his younger years, I frequently gave him those haircuts because traditional ones were challenging for him—and they still are to some extent. I’m unsure how he would react to a buzz cut now, but he enjoys standing in front of the mirror, lifting his hair, and saying, "Buzz buzz" followed by "No hair." When I asked if he wanted to be completely bald, he declined. So for now, we’ll stick to regular trims.
After picking him up from school, his repetitive phrases returned as if they had been waiting for their cue. He often prefers to discuss topics he is already familiar with, particularly the answers he knows. I hope to understand why he seeks validation for incorrect answers one day.
He was eager to attend therapy, though a bit more energetic than usual. I am grateful for the progress he’s making and the collaborative efforts of his therapists. Witnessing his growth is incredibly uplifting. In his early years, doctors were cautious about promising improvement, but I always believed in Owen's potential, and he continues to amaze me.
Therapy was a success today. His physical therapist plans to help him learn to hop, as he has mastered jumping but struggles with balancing on one leg. I believe this might be linked to his cross-body coordination. All three of his sessions were productive, and he requested no snacks until we got home, after which he eagerly listed places he wanted to visit, to which I replied, "Maybe tomorrow or Saturday."
Searching for answers remains my ongoing quest. While I’m unsure if I will ever find them, I’m committed to the journey. Reflecting on past challenges, I recognize that what truly matters is the triumphs we celebrate together. Life may be fraught with obstacles, but these victories make it all worthwhile. Embrace the victories and let not challenges dampen your joy. Sending smiles and sweet thoughts!
