The highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) strain has been confirmed in an individual in the U.S., as reported by Texas health officials and verified by the CDC. This marks the second known human case of influenza A(H5N1) in the United States, following a previous case in Colorado in 2022.

The seriousness of bird flu in humans is becoming more pronounced, with experts suggesting that it could pose risks comparable to those seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. The infection rate among dairy herds is also reportedly higher than anticipated, likely due to the movement of animals between different herds. Notably, even asymptomatic cows have tested positive for the virus.

Following outbreaks in U.S. wild birds and poultry that began in late 2021, the CDC has been vigilant in monitoring human cases linked to infected birds. Those who have contracted H5N1 have exhibited various symptoms, ranging from mild eye infections to severe respiratory illnesses, including pneumonia, which has resulted in fatalities in other countries.

According to the FDA, traces of the bird flu virus have been identified in pasteurized milk, though they assert this should not cause alarm. However, if traces of the virus can be found in milk, how can we remain unconcerned? The media is drawing parallels to the troubling COVID outbreak, with recent testing indicating that one in five milk samples contains traces of the bird flu virus.

What precautions should individuals take? Although the current threat is not severe, given that fatalities have occurred in other countries due to bird flu, it’s prudent to adopt preventive measures.

The CDC recommends avoiding direct contact with sick or deceased animals, including both wild and domestic birds, as well as livestock such as cattle. Additionally, it’s advisable to steer clear of animal carcasses, raw milk, droppings, litter, and any materials contaminated by birds or other animals suspected of being infected.

Humans should not consume unpasteurized (raw) milk or products made from it—such as cheese—if sourced from animals confirmed or suspected to be infected with avian influenza. While it is generally expected that farmers will prevent contaminated products from reaching consumers, there is always an element of risk. Egg producers have begun culling flocks after discovering infected hens.

To date, the bird flu virus has led to the culling of millions of hens, and reports indicate that 32 dairy herds across eight U.S. states—Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, and South Dakota—have been affected. The virus has been found in various bird species, including backyard chickens, seabirds, shorebirds, and migratory birds, with high mortality rates reported in 48 states.

The latest evidence indicates that the virus has also been found in dairy cows, baby goats, and pigs, suggesting its ability to cross species barriers and infect humans. Currently, there is no vaccine available for animals to protect them against this virus.
