Are AirPods 4 Really the New ‘Pros’? A Closer Look at the Features
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction to AirPods 4
Apple has recently introduced the fourth generation of its often-overlooked wireless earbuds, simply known as AirPods. Priced at $129, these new budget-friendly AirPods finally feature the enhancements that many have been anticipating.
Thanks to Apple's Charitable Trust, the AirPods 4 are now equipped with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and Transparency mode. Additionally, they now come with a USB-C port and incorporate some of the latest functionalities from the AirPods Pro 2, including Head Gestures. The Spatial Audio feature, first introduced with the third generation, has also been retained in this new version.
“Apple is finally narrowing the gap between standard AirPods and AirPods Pro.”
However, if you believe that, you might be too optimistic.
Are AirPods 4 the New Pros?
In short, the answer is no! Apple is well aware of how to maintain a distinction between the standard AirPods and the more premium Pros. There’s no way Apple will allow the regular model to become too similar to the Pros.
Let’s break down the misconceptions surrounding ANC and Transparency Mode.
Chapter 2: The Features Explained
Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency Mode have been staples of the AirPods Pro lineup since their debut in 2019. The first AirPods were launched alongside the iPhone 7 in September 2016, meaning the basic AirPods have been available for over eight years now.
Considering the timeline, it took five years and three generations for the regular AirPods to receive ANC and Transparency Mode after the initial release of the AirPods Pro. In contrast, other products like the Beats Studio Buds had already featured these functions back in 2021.
Moreover, the ANC available on the AirPods 4 does not match the performance of the AirPods Pro 2. According to Apple’s own website, the Pro model offers up to twice the noise cancellation compared to the AirPods 4.
It’s important to note that the version of AirPods 4 that supports ANC and Transparency is a different model altogether, costing an additional $179. Many third-party earbuds provide similar features at significantly lower prices, such as Realm, Noise, and OnePlus.
While it’s true that third-party options may not integrate seamlessly with Apple devices, it’s also clear that Apple has no intention of allowing that to change.
Excitement over introducing ANC and Transparency Mode to AirPods for $179 seems misplaced.
Apple AirPods 4 Review - Worth Buying Over AirPods Pro 2?
In this review, we delve into the features of the AirPods 4 and analyze whether they can compete with the AirPods Pro 2.
Chapter 3: What Lies Ahead for AirPods Pro
Rumors suggest that the upcoming AirPods Pro 3 will introduce several new features alongside enhancements to existing ones. A notable addition is expected to be a case with an LED display, allowing users to control music playback directly from the case.
Furthermore, future Pro models may include built-in storage in the case for offline listening of tracks, podcasts, and audiobooks, reminiscent of the iPod Nano. An advanced gyroscope for tracking health data and fitness movements is also anticipated, alongside improvements to ANC.
As a result, the next AirPods Pro will likely feature more advanced ANC, while the regular AirPods will continue to offer basic first-generation ANC.
Additionally, improvements in battery life and durability are expected, making the next generation of AirPods Pro potentially more resilient and suitable for active users.
Should You Consider Buying AirPods 4?
In all honesty, no. Spending $179 on a pair of wireless earbuds is not much different from paying $250 for the Pro version. If you're looking to upgrade from the first generation of AirPods Pro solely for the USB-C feature, it might be wise to wait for the third generation of the Pros. Transitioning from Pros to the standard AirPods may feel inadequate due to the lack of ear tips.
If you're upgrading from the first or second generation of AirPods or trying them for the first time, the second generation of AirPods Pro is a better choice, or you might want to hold out for the third generation.
Final Thoughts
The AirPods 4 represent Apple’s minimal effort to keep the standard AirPods relevant in the current market. Apple likely understands that merely making slight improvements and labeling them as new products could alienate even its most devoted fans.
Furthermore, offering ANC as a separate purchase for $179 feels like a significant oversight on Apple’s part. It’s about time Apple ceased taking its customers for granted.
